Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions/answers that we are frequently asked. If you have additional questions that aren't covered here, please feel free to give us a call at Johnsen Animal Hospital.

What are the Hospital hours?

   Our hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:30pm. On Saturdays we are open from 8:00am until noon. We are closed on Sunday.

2. Do I need to have an appointment?

  Appointments are preferred on weekdays, however we try to accomodate walk-ins, and emergencies are always accepted.  Saturday hours are on a walk-in basis only.

3. What forms of payment do you accept?

     Cash, Check, Mastercard,Visa, Discover, American Express, and CareCredit.

4. Can I make payments?

    Payment is required at the time of service.

5. At what age can I have my pet spayed or neutered?

   Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 6 months of age.  If you are a first-time client and we have never seen your pet, we require a pre-surgical examination ($20.00) to assure your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure.  We think it best that your pet be currently vaccinated prior to surgery.  For more information about our surgery protocols, go to our Surgical FAQ's page.

6.  What is the pre-anesthetic blood screening?

   This is a blood test that is run here in the clinic prior to surgery. It tests the organ functions, blood counts and clotting function of your pet. The pre-anesthetic blood screening is just one measure of many done to assure a safe and successful surgical experience.

7. How long do the sutures stay in after my pet's surgery?

   Procedures involving sutures/staples require them to be removed 10-14 days following the surgery.

8.  Is it a good idea to let my pet have at least one litter?

    No, there is no advantage to letting your pet have one litter. However there are plenty of advantages to having you pet spayed or neutered.  For more information please go to our " Why Spay or Neuter" page. 

9.  Do you board pets?

   No, we do not provide pet boarding services, however we recommend pet boarding facilities to our clients upon request.

10.  At what age should I initiate vaccinations for my pet?
     
     Your pet's first vaccinations should be started approximately 3 weeks after they are weaned from the mother's milk.  This usually places the pet in the age category of 6-9 weeks of age.
